CMS proposes surety bond requirement for DMEPOS suppliers

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, August 14, 2007

CMS issued a proposed durable medical equipment (DME) rule that would require all Medicare suppliers to submit a surety bond to the agency.

CMS feels that this requirement will help reduce the risk of fraudulent DME suppliers and help make sure that only legitimate DME suppliers are enrolled in the Medicare program.

The proposed rule could also help ensure that the Medicare program regains incorrect payments that came about from abusive billing practices. CMS would designate contractors to request payments from a surety.
