Tip: Create a comprehensive list of questions to ask during an EHR user survey

EHR Connection, August 13, 2007

A complete picture of user satisfaction can boost confidence in the EHR, say Qi Li, MD, MBA, vice president of clinical strategy at Carefx, a software company based in Scottsdale, AZ, and Omar Santiago, MSc, MBA senior project manager in the Practice Improvement Division of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

To better understand user satisfaction, consider performing a survey.

Li and Santiago recommend that EHR user surveys include specific questions, such as the following:

  • Is the EHR efficient?
  • Is the EHR difficult to use or does it require a lot of effort?
  • Does the EHR system improve your quality of life or patient care?
  • Is creating prescriptions with the EHR better than doing so on paper?
  • Is the medications area of the EHR easy to use? Is it intuitive? Does it save you time?

Obtain similar information regarding notes and labs. Aim for specific details about how users use the system.
