EMRs reduce the risk of malpractice suits

EHR Connection, August 13, 2007

A significant number of physician practices believe that EMRs will make them less vulnerable to malpractice suits, a survey conducted by Medical Records Institute, Inc. in Boston and Professional Risk Associates, Inc. in Midlothian, VA, found.

The survey, which included 115 respondents from physician practices in 27 specialties, yielded the following statistics that Medical Records Institute outlined in an August 7 press release:

  • Forty-five percent of respondents believe that using EMRs will make them less vulnerable to malpractice suits.
  • Twenty percent of respondents reported that their malpractice insurer offers a discount for having an EMR system in place.
  • Twenty percent said that they have been involved in a malpractice case in which an EMR provided much needed documentation.

"This is an important first survey on the current status of EMRs and their impact on malpractice risk," C. Peter Waegemann, Medical Records Institute CEO, stated in the press release. "It shows the need to address EMR system usage, training, and legality."
