Military EHR system faces challenges

EHR Connection, August 13, 2007

The Departments of Defense (DOD) and Veterans Affairs (VA) have failed for five years to come up with a plan to integrate their EHR systems, and according to the president's Commission on Care for America's Returning Wounded Warriors, the VA and DOD should develop a portal to store all of the departments' healthcare and benefits data within the year.

Commercial vendors who develop and manage Web-based health records systems argue that creating a Web-based military health record system should be easier to implement than it has been, according to an August 3 article in the Government Executive.

"Sharing information [between Defense and VA] has been the right thing to do for the past 20 years, and it's not rocket science," stated Robert McFarland, VA's former assistant secretary for IT and CIO.
