Shots fired in hospital ER
Healthcare Security Weekly, August 13, 2007
An agitated patient allegedly pulled out a gun and shot at a hospital monitor before security staff was able to take the weapon away from him, reported ABC 7 News.
The shooting occurred August 6 in the emergency room at the Sierra Medical Center in El Paso, TX. The El Paso police told the television station that an elderly man was taken to the emergency room complaining of shortness of breath. Police said a monitor that the man was hooked up to was making a beeping sound that apparently agitated him. He allegedly took out a handgun and shot at the machine. No one was injured.
The patient was treated, then taken into police custody, but not booked. Due to his medical condition, he was released to his family but faces charges of felony criminal mischief and disorderly conduct, ABC 7 News reported.
