When sitting can be hazardous to your health

Lab Safety Advisor, August 7, 2007

According to the April 2007 CTD News, employees seated in front of computer monitors may be at greater risk of developing deadly blood clots than even long-distance airline travelers.

Researchers in New Zealand conducted a study on deep-vein thrombosis where blood clots form in the legs. They found that 34% of their patients and been seated at work for long periods of time.

How does this translate to laboratory employees-how about cytotechnologists who read PAP smears all day and transcriptionists who type all day? Here are some suggestions:

  • Use adjustable workstations so employees can easily change their working postures.
  • Have employees take short three-minute rest breaks every hour to stand, stretch, and move around.
  • Utilize tasks throughout the workday that do not involve sitting in front of a computer or microscope.
  • Educate employees on the signs and symptoms of muscle fatigue.
