Using ergonomics and technology for lab-worker efficiency

Lab Safety Advisor, July 17, 2007

According to Alan Hedge, professor in the department of design at Cornell University, advances in technology are allowing lab employees to perform greater amounts of work more efficiently that ever before.

If your lab is switching from outdated computer technology or equipment, the skills of the employees must also be updated. For example, if your employees don't type well and efficiently, use voice recognition software to input simple text information or set up short cuts that can print a large amount of text with a few keystrokes.

Sensory and motor capabilities of older individuals are different than those of younger individuals. For example, the aging eye requires more light to be able to read from paper or the computer screen. Seek adjustable task lighting to help in this regard.

Whatever the approach that the lab takes, ergonomic must play an important role in helping to accommodate all employees' needs.
