Sharps safety plan requires documentation

Lab Safety Advisor, July 10, 2007

According to Enforcement Procedures for the Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens, document in your exposure control plan:

  • Consideration and implementation of appropriate commercially available and effective engineering controls designed to eliminate or minimize exposure
  • The process by which the input was requested and identify the employees or the positions of those employees who were involved

If you are still using non-safety engineered devices, be sure to have available OSHA-acceptable reasons for using them and documentation that you review this every year.

Please note that OSHA does not accept expense as a reason for continuing to use non-safety engineered devices.
