Is safety a priority or a value?

Lab Safety Advisor, July 3, 2007

Safety must be a value on an equal level with producing an accurate lab test result. Below is a list prepared by Joseph R. Kelbus, CSP, consultant to the National Safety Council in the April 2007 Safety+Health magazine. He asks the question: Is safety a priority or a value? How does your lab measure up?

Priority Value
1. Safety is not written into all job descriptions 1. Safety is written into everyone's job description
2. Only measure OSHA recordable, injuries and lost workdays 2. Measure positive safety achievements and track OSHA numbers
3. Safety is not an equal measurement in performance appraisals 3. Safety is an equal measurement in performance appraisals
4. No posted, written safety policy statement 4. Posted, written management policy statement combining safety, results and quality
5. Safety compliance training for hourly employees 5. Safety management training for all employees including supervisors and managers
6. React to injuries with discipline and fault-finding 6. Enforcement of all safety policies and procedures before injuries happen
7. Safety belongs to the safety professional
