Of all fractures from falls, hip fractures cause the greatest number of deaths and lead to the most severe health problems. Risk factors for hip fractures, other than age, include:

  • Inadequate nutrition
  • Immobility
  • Weakness
  • Gait and balance problems
  • Osteoporosis
  • Dementia
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Visual impairment
  • Neurological and musculoskeletal disorders
