Diabetes registries most cost-effective IT-enabled solution

Electronic diabetes registries-if adopted nationally-could save $8.34 billion over 10 years, according to a study from the Center for Information Technology Leadership (CITL), a nonprofit research center based at Partners HealthCare System in Boston. Costing $6.16 billion to implement, researchers found this to be the most cost effective information technology (IT)-enabled disease management (DM) solution currently available. The report, The Value of Information Technology-Enabled Diabetes Management, concludes that all IT-enabled DM can improve care processes, delay Type 2 diabetes complications, and save healthcare dollars in the long term, says Douglas Johnston, CITL executive director.
