Convenient-care clinics have chance to offer DM, wellness

Convenient-care clinics-located where people already shop and offering affordable rates-have an opportunity to evolve from a cold-and-flu-treatment-based model of care to a model that provides wellness programs and services and integrates with disease management (DM), experts say. The cost-effective clinics-which use nurse practitioners and often reach people who haven't seen a physician in a long time-appeal to both patients and payers, and fit well into a healthcare system that has too few primary care physicians in many areas, says Charles Peck, MD, chief medical officer of Bloomfield, CT-based Take Care Health Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of Walgreen Company.
