Swedish Medical Center drops United HealthCare coverage

Managed Care Weekly Advisor, August 8, 2007

Citing poor reimbursement rates for treatments by its physicians and in its hospitals, Swedish Medical Center will no longer accept insurance coverage from United HealthCare subscribers.

According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Swedish-employed physicians will drop United HealthCare plans on September 8, and the hospital itself will no longer accept plans beginning October 8. Swedish has sent letters of notification to 14,000 households covered by United HealthCare.

A spokesman from United HealthCare said Swedish is seeking reimbursement rates that make healthcare unaffordable and are significantly higher than other Seattle-based hospitals, but that further discussions are a possibility.
