Intruder attacks three patients at Cleveland hospital
Healthcare Security Weekly, August 6, 2007
Police on August 1 arrested a 31-year-old man accused of assaulting three female patients at Fairview Hospital in Cleveland.
Hospital officials said an intruder entered the first floor of an all-female wing of the hospital in the early morning hours, reported NewsNet5. Police said he fondled two patients and sexually assaulted a third woman. The patients were ages 38, 55, and 75, according to news reports.
One patient told police the man entered her room and told her he was there to exam her abdominal incision. When he did something else, she called for a nurse and the suspect fled. Security guards chased the man, apprehended him, and called police. He also faces charges of robbery and theft in connection with the theft of computer accessories from some hospital offices.
Hospital officials said they have increased security, are re-educating staff about how to ensure safety, and are reviewing policies and procedures.
