Psych patient charged in death of roommate

Healthcare Security Weekly, August 6, 2007

Police charged a 34-year-old patient, who was about to be discharged, with second-degree murder in the death of his roommate on the psychiatric ward at Edmonton's Royal Alexandra Hospital in Canada, reported the CBC.

Police also charged him with possession of a weapon for the purpose of committing an offense. Police responded to the hospital July 30 after staff and security officers broke up an altercation. The man's 57-year-old roommate was pronounced dead shortly after police arrived at 3:50 a.m., the CBC reported.

Police said they found a knife at the scene and an autopsy determined the man died of blunt and sharp force trauma to the head and neck. Nurses in the ward have reported an increase in violent incidents and requested improvements, a nurses' union official said.
