New Jersey legislation targets MRSA

Quality Improvement Monitor, August 3, 2007

New Jersey yesterday became the latest state to order special infection precautions at hospitals, according to the Associated Press (AP).

Governor Jon S. Corzine signed legislation that will create a screening program for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and require hospitals to implement infection controls and report MRSA cases to the state, the AP said.

"A few very basic safeguards can save the state millions of dollars in health care costs," State Senator Barbara Buono, D-Middlesex, the bill sponsor, told the AP. New Jersey joins 24 states that have laws requiring hospital infection reporting.
