Moses Cone hospital system drops Blue Cross

Managed Care Weekly Advisor, August 1, 2007

Effective November 1, Moses Cone Health System of Greensboro, NC, will cancel its contract with Chapel Hill's Blue Cross and Blue Shield. The largest health insurer in the state declined Moses Cone's demand for an 18 percent fee increase this year and a 36 percent overall increase by 2009.

According to the Triangle Business Journal the nonprofit hospital system is concerned about Blue Cross reimbursement rates, which it says have fallen behind other insurance companies. The hospital's demands would increase Blue Cross members' premiums by 5 percent next year.

Blue Cross says all negotiations cease once a hospital cancels a contract.
