Hospital upgrades patient rooms

Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, July 20, 2007

As part of a $250 million renovation, Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, IL, is building an eight-story addition that will feature balconies on each floor and computers in every room.

The new single rooms will also have bedside bathrooms and floor-to-ceiling windows, says the Chicago Tribune. The renovations are the result of a shift in the needs of the patient and healthcare industry standards, the Tribune says. When Northwest Community Hospital opened in 1959, shared rooms were standard. With the addition, they will account for less than 20% of the hospital's beds. Officials say more single rooms will decrease infections and the risk of medical errors.

The eight-story addition will also have a 24-bed critical care unit, a labor and delivery floor, a postpartum section, and three floors for surgical patients.
