California rates surgeons by coronary bypass performance
Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, July 20, 2007
After nearly four years of analysis, the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development released a list on July 13 of bypass death rates for 121 hospitals and 302 heart surgeons. According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, the data covers adult bypass procedures performed between January 1, 2003 and December 31, 2004.
The report says 95% of the surgeons performed close to the state's expected mortality average of 3.08%, with several performing significantly better or worse.
About 20,000 Californians undergo the bypass graft procedure annually, and half the procedures are done on an emergency basis. Bypass procedures account for 8.5% of the non-maternity adult admissions to California hospitals.
With this report, California joins New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts on the list of states that track bypass death rates for hospitals and heart surgeons.
