CHW advocates for healthcare reform, airs national ad

Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, July 6, 2007

One of the largest hospital systems in California is running a series of advertisements asking state legislators and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to pass a healthcare reform bill.

Catholic Healthcare West is based in San Francisco and operates 42 hospitals in California, Arizona, and Nevada, the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal reports. The print ads will run in a number of national and regional publications, including the The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle and The Sacramento Bee. The ads also appeared in Newsweek, Time, and US News & World Report magazines. The print ads will run until September.

Last year, the Catholic hospital system provided more than $800 million in charity care, community benefits, and unreimbursed care, according to the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal. The system also dealt with a class action lawsuit brought by the uninsured in January. That settlement could result in refunds or reduced bills worth as much as $423 million.
