Kiosks streamline triage process
Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, June 15, 2007
Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, TX, has implemented a computer kiosk check-in system, hoping to make the admitting process quicker for patients in its emergency department (ED).
The kiosks-which have been in place for more than two weeks-allow patients to enter their medical condition directly, instead of waiting in line to be admitted. Patients are asked for their name, birth date, and gender before choosing their symptoms from a list. Certain ailments are considered a priority, and the system notifies staff if a patient must be seen immediately.
Parkland ED patients must still wait during busy times, but the computer system has helped eliminate long admission lines and aided in protecting patient privacy.
