Hospital security guard subdues man with shotgun
Healthcare Security Weekly, July 30, 2007
A security guard at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn in Scottsdale, AZ subdued a 54-year-old man armed with a shotgun on July 23.
Scottsdale police told the Associated Press (AP) that the shotgun went off during the tussle with the guard, sending buckshot ricocheting in a hospital administration building. Three people, including two hospital employees, suffered minor injuries from debris sent flying by the blast, the AP reported.
The gunman was possibly seeking revenge against two employees because he had been barred from the hospital after a confrontation in May-ironically with the same security guard who subdued him. A police spokeswoman said the guard "averted a potentially terrible scene there by his quick reaction." The gunman, a one time patient at the hospital, faces counts of attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault, discharge of a firearm within city limits, and disorderly conduct.
