Medical center tightens security

Healthcare Security Weekly, July 30, 2007

The Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD, has tightened security after a man pretending to be a priest walked into a trauma unit June 15, visited a patient, and then walked out with the man's credit cards.

Brian Anderson, head of Sanford Health security, told a television station that clergy members routinely come in and out of the emergency department. But now they, as well as other staff, will be stopped to verify credentials. The hospital now locks doors to pediatrics, the neonatal ICU, and the emergency room. Visitors must also use a sign-in sheet, giving their name and the patient's name they are coming to see.
