Pennsylvania law tackles hospital-acquired infections

Quality Improvement Monitor, July 27, 2007

Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell signed a law last week requiring hospitals, outpatient surgery centers, and nursing homes to develop infection control systems that meet state health department standards and report all hospital-acquired infections to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to the Associated Press (AP).

Financial reimbursements will be awarded to facilities that reduce infections by 10% from the previous year.

"The train is moving, and it's moving in the right direction," Pennsylvania Medical Society President Mark Piasio, MD, told the AP.
