Tip: Study the competition when drafting your EHR strategy
EHR Connection, July 23, 2007
It may seem silly to worry about whether other hospitals are further along with EHRs than you are, especially if your organization is running smoothly. But you should be concerned.
If you have several hospitals in a close regional area and you share members of your medical staff, it is only a matter of time before the benefits they receive at another facility with electronic document management make your facility seem subpar.
In addition, think about recruitment. You'll be able to recruit more coders if you give them the option of working remotely, which is possible because EHRs makes records available online.
Finally, consider cost. In an electronic HIM environment, the cost of running a department is typically cheaper in the long run in terms of resources and space.
Can you afford to remain in a paper state and still be competitive in the electronic HIM domain as well?
