Aetna survey: Most Americans don’t use, understand PHRs
EHR Connection, July 23, 2007
Aetna and the Financial Planning Association are adding personal health record (PHR) information to an online educational campaign after a survey showed that 64% of adults said they do not know or are unsure about what a PHR is. Although about 70 million people have access to PHRs through their health insurers, knowledge about them remains cursory at best. Of those who are familiar with PHRs, only 11% currently use one to keep track of their medical and health history. The campaign's tools, available at www.PlanforYourHealth.com, include tips for getting the most out of a PHR, personalizing it, and the top reasons for using one. When asked why they didn't use a PHR, 35% of respondents said they have their own system for maintaining records, 26% were concerned with the security of personal information, and 18% said they don't know how to use and manage one.
