PPV: Connect with users to improve EHR experiences

EHR Connection, July 23, 2007

As EHRs become more prevalent, organizations are looking for ways to improve EHR usability. "Usability is a key challenge to EHR adoption," says Qi Li, MD, MBA, vice president of clinical strategy at Carefx, a software company based in Scottsdale, AZ.

Throughout the various EHR implementation phases--from users focusing on e-prescribing and basic documentation, to organization members promoting and adapting the EHR for larger user constituencies--EHR usability concerns loom large.

"EHR usability is the quality of a user's experience when interacting with an EHR," says Omar Santiago, MSc, MBA, senior project manager in the Practice Improvement Division of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
