Father visits newborn in hospital, gets nabbed by bounty hunter

Healthcare Security Weekly, July 23, 2007

It should have been a happy day for 22-year-old Philip Tukes when he went to the Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, NJ on July 16 just hours after his baby was born.

But according to the Bridgewater Courier News, Tukes may have to get pictures of his newborn sent to him in jail. That's because when he arrived at the hospital he was met in the hallway by men who weren't exactly looking to congratulate him, including Al McCallen, a bounty hunter and manager of Ace Bail Bonds in New Brunswick. "I shouted out his name, and when he looked up, I saw a tattoo I knew was on the back of his neck," McCallen told the newspaper. "Of course, he (Tukes) denied he was who I was looking for, but the hospital bracelet with his name on it didn't help him."

The new father had jumped bail when he failed to appear at a May 18 pre-trial conference in Superior Court in Somerville to face charges of drug possession with intent to distribute, the newspaper reported. The bounty hunters escorted Tukes in handcuffs to see his baby one last time before taking him to the police station.
