HHS fights for DME fraud protection

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, July 17, 2007

Mike Leavitt, secretary for the Department of Health and Human Services (HSS), announced July 5 a two-year effort that would further protect Medicare recipients from durable medical equipment (DME) fraud, according to the HHS Web site.

Leavitt's plan will take effect immediately in two areas of the country where there's a large concentration of suppliers-South Florida and Southern California. If the HHS successfully stops fraud in these areas then the project could expand nationwide.

HHS and the Department of Justice formed a Medicare fraud task force comprised of local, state, and federal investigators who use real-time analysis of Medicare billing data to combat fraudulence.
