The most common symptom of compartment syndrome is severe pain, especially with movement or stretching. Other symptoms include:

  • Pain that seems out of proportion to the injury
  • Tenderness with even palpations
  • Pain with deep breathing
  • Tingling, prickling, burning, or numbness
  • Weakness in or inability to use the muscle
  • Loss of a pulse in the extremities (late, ominous sign)
