Medicare experiment shows docs can help lower health costs
Quality Improvement Monitor, July 13, 2007
An experiment by Medicare that allows physicians to share in cost savings showed that doctors can help lower healthcare spending by coordinating care and keeping their patients out of the hospital, The New York Times reported this week.
The experiment aims to pay doctors for the quality of care they provide instead of how many tests and procedures they perform. The pilot, which began in April 2005 and will continue through April 2008, is an attempt by Medicare to rethink the way it reimburses doctors, the Times said.
"We want to reward providers for the right care at the right time," Herb Kuhn, acting deputy administrator for the CMS, told the paper. He also said he was "very, very pleased with the first-year results."
