Tennessee pilot lets consumers know health prices ahead of time

Quality Improvement Monitor, July 13, 2007

BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee has launched a pilot program that informs patients how much they will owe out of pocket before they visit a doctor or have surgery, according to the The Chattanooga Times Free Press.

"What drove this was convenience for the member," company spokesman Scott Wilson told the newspaper. "It was inconvenient when you were at the doctor's office and you didn't know what you were going to encounter."

The pilot program is for consumers enrolled in consumer-directed health plans. The plans typically have lower premiums, but much higher out-of-pocket deductibles.
