American Medical Association says Medicare cuts will harm Oregon seniors

Managed Care Weekly Advisor, July 11, 2007

The AMA National House Call Campaign has identified an access to care problem that could impact nearly 504,000 senior citizens in Oregon. On January 1, 2008, the government will cut payments to physicians by 10%, forcing physicians to limit their intake of new patients.

In an AMA survey of physicians, 60% of the respondents said they would limit new Medicare payments if legislators approve the cut. Statewide, physicians could lose up to $41 million for the care of elderly and disabled patients.

According to the Oregon Medical Association, there are 19 practicing physicians per 1,000 Medicare beneficiaries.
