CMS proposes policy, payment changes for physician services in 2008
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, July 10, 2007
CMS released a proposed rule that would revise payment rates and policies under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS). Under the rule, CMS estimates it will pay approximately $58.9 billion to 900,000 physicians and other healthcare professionals in 2008.
CMS outlines measures from seven categories for inclusion in the 2008 PQRI. Among these are measures from the Ambulatory Quality Alliance (AQA) Starter Set, measures from the National Quality Forum (NQF) ambulatory measure set, and new quality measures currently in the works.
The proposed rule also includes:
- A new initiative that encourages the use of electronic prescribing to improve the speed and accuracy of care furnished to beneficiaries
- Additional quality measures for the Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI)
