Medicare C-SNPs, private FFS gain in 2007

The new Medicare reimbursement model that pays insurers more to take care of sicker patients has led to a proliferation of health plans actually marketing to sicker patients-and those plans are relying on disease management (DM) and care management programs to control costs. Medicare Special Needs Plans (SNP) are growing rapidly. In 2006, there were 276 SNPs with more than 600,000 beneficiaries enrolled, but only 13 of these were chronic care SNPs (C-SNPs), with a total of 72,000 enrollees, says Harry Leider, MD, chief medical officer of Baltimore-based XLHealth Corp. and its SNP subsidiary, Care Improvement Plus.
