Report: ED workers routinely abused

Quality Improvement Monitor, July 6, 2007

Emergency department workers in New Jersey hospitals routinely suffer verbal abuse and nearly one-third have been assaulted, according to The Star Ledger.

A recently released report, Workplace Violence and Prevention in New Jersey Hospital Emergency Departments, found 72% of those who were assaulted verbally or physically never reported the event, with nurses being at the highest risk, the paper said. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health funded the study.

The report, which surveyed 50 of New Jersey's 79 hospitals, also said that 90% of respondents reported verbal abuse at least once a year, and only 6% reported no verbal abuse. Sixty-one percent of the workers said they had received threats of physical violence.
