HMOs seek average premium hike of 10.7 percent

Managed Care Weekly Advisor, July 4, 2007

For 2008, HMOs in the Northeast are seeking to raise premiums by an average of 10.7%, a figure which is slightly higher than what the insurers initially proposed in 2007, according to a survey released by Hewitt Associates.

Nationwide, HMOs are seeking premium hikes of about 14.1%, on average, the highest rate in four years. Initial proposed increases averaged 11.7% in 2007 and 12.4% in 2006, but the 2007 figure was reduced to 8.2% after negotiations between employers and insurers. The 2008 percentage is indicative of premium quotes for 160 large employers and more than 1 million workers.
