CDC suspends research at university lab

Infection Control Monitor, July 13, 2007

The CDC in early July ordered a Texas A&M University lab to stop all research experiments with "select" agents and toxins, according to news reports. The order was an expansion of an ongoing investigation concerning the university's failure to notify the CDC about an exposure to Q fever.

"Select" agents and toxins refer to certain viruses and bacterial agents, that can be dangerous to public health and safety if not handled properly,

The university's interim president acknowledged the university made "a clear screw-up" when it failed to report the 2006 infection with brucellosis of one of its biodefense lab workers to the CDC, reported The Dallas Morning News. But he denied wrongdoing in reports of three lab workers exposed to a different agent, Q fever, and allegations of a coverup.
