Brookwood's Vestavia project encounters resistance

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, July 3, 2007

HealthSouth Corporation, Birmingham Surgery Centers, and St. Vincent's hospital, all located in Alabama, have filed a contested case hearing to stop Brookwood Medical Center's proposed ASC in Vestavia Hills, according to a Birmingham Business Journal article.

The contested case hearing will allow these three opponents to make their case against Brookwood's proposed project. According to the article, "St. Vincent's said its opposition centers on the 'inconsistency of the [Brookwood] project' with the Certificate of Need rules, Vestavia Surgical not being an appropriate applicant and the project having a detrimental effect on One Nineteen [St. Vincent's proposed ASC] and St. Vincent's."

To confuse matters even more, HealthSouth Outpatient CareCenter previously joined Brookwood in requesting a contested case hearing against St. Vincent's proposed ASC.
