Man sentenced to home detention in hospital attack

Healthcare Security Weekly, July 2, 2007

A 42-year-old father, found guilty by a jury of attacking hospital workers after learning his 19-year-old son died of a drug overdose, was sentenced to 90 days of home detention and three and one-half years probation, the Courier-Journal of Louisville, KY reported.

The Jeffersonville resident said he was sorry for his action at Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville, IN and apologized to the court and his community. A judge sentenced the man on charges of battery for striking a hospital security guard and a paramedic, as well as throwing a chair during a March 11 emergency room attack, but suspended the sentences.

The man's son was brought to the hospital in full cardiac arrest and died in the emergency room. The man and two other teenage sons threw furniture in the attack.
