Residents who are at risk for weight loss and malnutrition usually experience one or more of the following:

Need help eating and drinking

Eat less than half of meals and snacks

Have mouth pain, dental problems, or missing teeth

Have dentures that do not fit

Have difficulty chewing or swallowing

Choke or cough while eating

Depression, crying spells, withdrawal from others

Wander and pace

Chronic disease, such as diabetes, COPD, or cancer
