Weight loss and malnutrition

Long-Term Care Nursing Advisor, June 29, 2007

Weight loss and malnutrition are common problems in long-term care. Newly admitted residents often lose a few pounds within the first month. However, weight stabilizes soon afterward. Malnutrition, weight loss, and other weight-related complications may go unnoticed over time because staff does not compare the current weight with the previous weights. This is a serious problem that is a common component of lawsuits, often in combination with pressure ulcers and other conditions that depend on nutrition to promote healing.
