MRSA may infect up to 5% of hospital patients
Quality Improvement Monitor, June 29, 2007
The superbug known as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) may be infecting up to 5% of all hospital patients - 10 times more than previously thought - according to a new study by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology.
At least 30,000 hospital patients may have MRSA infections, the study said, according to the Yahoo News.
"This is a welcome piece of information that emphasizes that this is a huge problem in healthcare facilities, and more needs to done to prevent it," John Jernigan, an epidemiologist with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told Yahoo News. The researchers concluded that at least 46 out of every 1,000 patients had the bug.
