UnitedHealthcare takes on Blues' lead in market

Managed Care Weekly Advisor, June 27, 2007

As predicted, UnitedHealthcare of Pennsylvania has doubled its member base across the state from 300,000 to 600,000, although the number in Western Pennsylvania only increased from 120,000 to 145,000.

In addition to direct competition from Blue Cross, hospital availability is also responsible for the modest increase in the Western Pennsylvania customer base. In all, 40 hospitals are available, but UnitedHealthcare has yet to sign an agreement with UPMC Presbyterian and UPMC Shadyside, two of the most profitable hospitals in the area. UnitedHealthcare has negotiated several other UPMC hospitals into its network: Magee-Women's Hospital of UPMC, UPMC Passavant, UPMC Margaret, and UPMC Passavant Cranberry.
