Safety training presentation tips
Lab Safety Advisor, June 26, 2007
You have just been appointed the new safety officer. Along with congratulations and a pat on the back comes the awesome responsibility of training the staff on safety topics. Here are some tips that may help:
- Prepare well for your presentation.
- Consider the knowledge level and experience of your audience and modify your presentation to that level.
- If you use audio-visual equipment, check it out to make sure it works and you can be seen and heard from all locations in the room.
- Start and end on time.
- Develop good objectives.
- Use visual aids such as props to make you points.
- NEVER read your presentation. There is noting worse than a mechanical mumbling monotone.
- Do not eat or drink dairy products or carbonated beverages beforehand. Dairy products cause phlegm to build up and make talking difficult. Carbonated beverages cause gas in the stomach which leads to belching. Room temperature bottled water is best to consume during the presentation.
- Revise and update your presentation to create a fresh approach and make the information more interesting.
