Exit route compliance

Lab Safety Advisor, May 29, 2007

OSHA Standard 1910.37 addresses the requirements for exit routes. Fines can be assessed if the exit route is obstructed with materials or equipment, or if an exit route includes a door that can be locked.

Exit routes must be free of highly flammable chemicals, have adequate lighting, and display signs that indicate the direction of travel to the nearest exit. Evacuation routes must be posted in a central and accessible location in the laboratory.
