Hospital technician charged with stealing ID from ER patient

Healthcare Security Weekly, June 25, 2007

Police on June 19 arrested a technician at Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine (TX) and charged him in connection with the theft of credit cards and other identification from a dying patient in the emergency room last month, reported the Forth Worth Star-Telegram.

Dandy David Wiles, a 29-year-old Dallas man, was charged with taking the driver's license, the Social Security card, a gasoline card, and American Express card of the patient who died of a heart attack on May 10. The 58-year-old patient was a former Grapevine assistant police chief who was taken to the hospital after he crashed his vehicle.

An arrest warrant affidavit indicated Wiles used the credit cards to purchase a notebook computer and a television, the newspaper reported. He is expected to be charged with fraudulent use or possession of identifying information, police said. The patient's wife realized her husband's credit cards and information were taken when she received a bill on June 5 and reported the theft to investigators. Police detectives obtained a store surveillance video at a Target store that showed someone purchasing the television and using a photograph went to the hospital where Wiles was identified.
