Sutter finds success with retail clinics
Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, June 13, 2007
Five months after becoming one of the first healthcare systems in the country to join the retail healthcare market, California-based Sutter Health's six retail clinics have treated more than 3,300 patients, and more clinics are part of the plan for 2008, according to the Sacramento Business Journal.
Sutter Health is already eyeing plans for expansion by teaming up with Rite Aid and other businesses. Doing so allows pharmacy customers who are already in the stores to enjoy cost-effective, convenient healthcare, according to Jody Cook, a spokeswoman for Rite Aid. The clinics located in residential neighborhoods allow the health system to reach more patients and have greater visibility in the community.
Cost and convenience seem to be the biggest reasons why patients are visiting the clinics. A visit to the clinic averages $59, and exams are conducted by nurse practitioners or physician assistants. Appointments are not necessary.
