Video game educates young cancer patients

Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, June 1, 2007

Health insurance provider CIGNA is turning to the video game niche to educate young cancer patients about their condition and treatment. The Philadelphia-based healthcare giant is releasing free copies of the video game Re-Mission, whose main character-a brunette nanobot named Roxie-travels through 20 levels and zaps cancer cells.

HopeLab, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of chronically sick youth, developed the game to teach young patients about the disease. It seems to be working; a study examining 375 patients aged 13 to 29 in the U.S., Canada, and Australia said playing the game improved the players' quality of life and knowledge about cancer. CIGNA is distributing the game online and to doctorís offices.
