S.M.A.R.T. Association releases LifeMed card program
Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, June 1, 2007
SMART Association has released a new technology that will allow consumers to communicate their health information to emergency workers and clinicians, even if they are unable to speak. The LifeMed card utilizes computer chip technology to store medical information that a user can upload using their own computer.
In non-emergency situations, the LifeMed card will speed up the check-in and treatment processes by eliminating the need for a patient to fill out numerous forms. Ownership of medical data is returned to the owner of the card, and complicated administrative processes are simplified.
Patients can upload basic demographic data, insurance information, emergency information, their allergies, medical conditions, and recent prescriptions right on the hospitalís Web site. The information is securely encrypted onto the LifeMed card. When patients come to the hospital, they present the LifeMed card. The LifeMed card's information, which can be updated, is then accessed by a hospital's admissions unit and matched to the hospital's data management software.
